C’è un tema che tocca ogni giorno il nostro lavoro: la sovranità digitale.

Non è un concetto astratto e lo sa bene chi lavora quotidianamente con organizzazioni che basano le proprie attività sulla qualità, l’affidabilità e il controllo dei dati. I nostri clienti ci chiedono di essere al loro fianco non solo per risolvere problemi tecnici, ma per aiutarli a comprendere quali scelte tecnologiche li rendono più autonomi e quali, invece, li espongono a dipendenze che oggi possono sembrare invisibili. Mentre domani potrebbero diventare molto concrete.

È un terreno che conosciamo da tempo. Nel 2018, insieme al gruppo di ricerca Mobile Middleware dell’Università di Bologna, abbiamo scritto e pubblicato su IEEE Communications Magazine un articolo su una piattaforma big data progettata per comunità locali e smart city.

Il principio che guidava la piattaforma era già allora quello che ancora oggi il mercato chiama “glocal”: superare la dipendenza da servizi esclusivamente globali, restituendo controllo e valore ai contesti locali. Un’idea che allora rappresentava ricerca avanzata e che oggi è diventata una delle risposte più citate alla sfida della sovranità digitale.

Quel lavoro rappresenta il modo in cui ci piace muoverci: insieme al mondo accademico, con partner istituzionali e industriali, su temi che non sono ancora urgenti ma che sappiamo diventeranno tali. Mantenere viva questa capacità di lettura anticipata fa parte del servizio che offriamo ai clienti.

Forrester Research, una delle più autorevoli società di analisi tecnologica al mondo, ha citato Enrico Meneghel di Imola Informatica nel report di luglio 2025 Digital Sovereignty Is Your Alternative To Digital Chaos:

“Industries like banking are already used to sovereignty considerations, while other industries like manufacturing lag. Banks have a culture of open protocols, and they avoid adopting proprietary features to prevent lock-in and dependence on foreign vendors”.

Vedere Imola Informatica citata all’interno della ricerca non rappresenta un traguardo. Per Imola Informatica è parte di un percorso che, per chi svolge questo lavoro, non finisce mai davvero.

Il report, firmato da Dario Maisto, coglie con precisione un punto di svolta: la sovranità digitale ha smesso di essere un tema legato esclusivamente alla compliance normativa per diventare una priorità strategica che attraversa l’intero stack tecnologico: infrastrutture, rete, software, AI, persone. E la risposta è ibrida, adattiva, contestuale: il tipo di complessità in cui crediamo di poter dare un contributo concreto.

Digital Sovereignty: why it matters to all of us

There is a theme that affects our work every day: digital sovereignty.

It is not an abstract concept and those who work daily with organizations that build their activities on the quality, reliability and control of data, know it. Our customers ask us to be at their side not only to solve technical problems, but to help them understand which technological choices make them more autonomous and which, on the other hand, expose them to dependencies that today might seem invisible and tomorrow could become very concrete.

It is a terrain that we have known for some time. In 2018, together with the Mobile Middleware research group of the University of Bologna, we wrote an article about a big data platform designed for local communities and smart cities, published in IEEE Communications Magazine. That work represents the way we like to move: with the academic world, with institutional and industrial partners, on issues that are not yet urgent but that we know will become so. Keeping this early reading ability alive is part of the service we offer to customers.

The report, authored by Dario Maisto, accurately captures a turning point: digital sovereignty has ceased to be a matter of regulatory compliance to become a strategic priority that crosses the entire technology stack: infrastructure, network, software, AI, people. And the answer is hybrid, adaptive, contextual: the kind of complexity in which we believe we can make a real contribution.
